FRIDAY REPRO TIP - We've had lots of calls this week about using Dostinex to induce a heat cycle, so here's some more info: It's best to wait for at least 5 months since the last heat cycle before using it. Mother Nature designed dogs to be out of heat for at least 4+ months (to give the uterus a rest) and when you try to outsmart her, well, oftentimes you get the short end of the stick. So the longer it's been since her last cycle, the better.
At that time, ruling out a thyroid deficiency is important (low thyroid hormones could delay the onset of heat), and testing progesterone helps confirm that she hasn't had a silent heat in the last few weeks (which would make her nonresponsive to the Dostinex).
Cost of the medication ranges based on the size of the dog ($175-350). Probably the best thing about Dostinex, though, is the lack of negative side effects! No nausea, no implant, etc. It's currently our method of choice for heat induction. As always, feel free to give us a call if you'd like more info. Have a great weekend!
