Depending on the location and availability of the stud dog and bitch, semen may be collected for immediate use (fresh semen) or processed for use at a different location or later date (chilled or frozen semen). Ovulation timing is necessary to identitfy the bitch's optimal breeding time. A combination of vaginal cytology, progesterone and LH tests will ensure that breeding is performed during the bitch's fertile period in order to maximize the chances of a successful breeding.
We are fully committed to helping you achieve the best results in conception rates and litter sizes. This may sometimes require testing and procedures to be performed after hours or on weekends and we are fully staffed to accomodate these needs.
Progesterone test: We usually recommend that progesterone testing start around day 5-7 of a bitch's heat cycle. Depending on the results of your bitch's first progesterone test, the doctor will decide how often testing needs to occur. Testing is usually done every 2-3 days until the optimal values are reached for your particular type of breeding.
LH testing: This test identifies the luteinizing hormone surge in the bitch, which is considered the most accurate way to define the fertile period for breeding. LH testing is usually only recommended for frozen semen breedings, where precise ovulation timing is critical to a successful outcome.
Vaginal Cytology: Vaginal cytology is most commonly recommended on the initial visit for ovulation timing. The results help define the degree of cornification of the cellular lining in the female reproductive tract, which is directly related to estrogen concentrations which are responsible for the outward sign of heat in the bitch.
